There are many ways guardians and community members can become involved in our community, including ranging from simply attending our community events sponsored by the PTA, to serving as one of our parent leaders on our leadership teams, and everything in between! Your participation in our school matters and is something your child will remember forever. We honor the fact that we all have different capacities to give and participate, and the hope is that each of our family can attend events when available and volunteer when you can. Please see our BRSSD Volunteer information website for additional information, including clearance forms for those who wish to volunteer for field trips or clubs. Volunteers working under constant direct supervision of a school district employee do not require additional clearance, including classroom volunteers, lunch time volunteers, and volunteering for events.
Volunteering & visiting expectations
Code of Conduct during volunteering and visiting campus:

CONFIDENTIALITY: Only discuss matters concerning students with the designated school staff.
IMPARTIALITY: Remain neutral in any student issues or school situations
APPEARANCE: Dress appropriately following our school dress code, including being prepared for sun and a variety of weather.
Visitation protocol
All guests must sign in at our “sign in table” located in the main office stating their reason for visit (meeting, volunteer, event, etc)
All guardian visits must be made through a prior appointment
All guests must wear a guest badge
Guardians who are dropping off their student or materials do not need to sign in the log, but must still enter through the office
Events sponsored by the PTA afte school hours do not require an office check in or sign-in
Daily Volunteering Opportunities
Lunch time supervision
We always welcome guardians to volunteer to support with our lunch supervision. All guardians can sign up for volunteer supervision on ParentSquare. Once you have signed up for a supervision shift, the main office will assign you to a supervision post. You will learn your assignment upon arriving for your volunteer duty. Please note that you may not be assigned to a post where your child's grade level is assigned to at lunch, as we expect our volunteers to support all students. All lunch volunteers are to sign this agreement before their 1st shift.
Morning and afterschool cross walk
Help us keep our campus safe during our morning drop off and afternoon pick up times! Our parking lot and neighboring streets get rather busy during these times and we rely on volunteers to work our crosswalks, as our staff are assigned to supervision posts on campus.
All community members interested in daily cross walk duty can sign up for a shift (or multiple shifts!) on ParentSquare
Parent Leadership Volunteering
Parent-Teacher Association (PTA)
Parents and guardians can serve as an executive board member, holding a leadership position, or may join as a general member. Executive Board members meet monthly with the principal, oversee our PTA budget, manage community events and volunteers, and create action plans to continue to make our school an inviting and welcoming space. Executive board members commit to about 1-4 volunteer hours a month. General PTA assembly members are invited to attend 4 evening meetings a year where you can learn more about school initiatives and ways you can get involved in the upcoming months. Depending on general assembly members commitment to planning or volunteering events, general assembly members can expect to spend 0-3 volunteer hours a month. See our PTA tab for more information.
Please attend our PTA general assembly meetings and read our parent bulletins for the most up-to-date information on upcoming events. We are always in need of parent volunteers! Some examples of events include: Halloween Trunk or Treat, Multicultural Day, game nights and Discovery Day.
School Site Council (SSC)
The School Site Council is an advisory board to the principal and they have discretion over our School Plan for Student Achievement (SPSA) that is submitted to the district and state. The SSC helps develop our annual school goals and analyze the effectiveness. The SSC also reviews the school budget related to our school goals and advises the principal on where our money is allocated. 3 SSC parent leaders are elected every 2 years and have voting power. All community members are invited to attend meetings.
Examples of budget allocation our SSC has approved:
Academic enrichment and intervention programs used by teachers in their classrooms
Substitutes for teachers to take a work day with their grade level peers
Budget for teachers to improve the culture and climate of their classroom
Other volunteering opportunities
Room Parent & classroom volunteers
Look out for communication from your child's teacher regarding how you can become a room parent and how a room parent can support, as well as other volunteering opportunities without being a room parent. Each teacher may have slightly different needs depending on the student's grade level. Room parents may assist with events like coordinating with the teacher on special events or class parties, organize a gift for the teacher for special occasions, or regularly assist the teacher in the classroom. All guardians will be given opportunities to volunteer in the classroom for various events, like supervising a station for a class celebration or joining as a guest reader. Reach out to your child's teacher for any inquiries.
Sharing your culture
We invite guardians and our community members into our classrooms to share a cultural event or tradition your family celebrates. Please reach out to your child's teacher if you would like to join their class in a guest lesson.
